How should I care for my dentures?
-
American Dental Association answered:Like your teeth, your dentures should be brushed daily to remove food particles and plaque. Brushing also can help keep the teeth from staining.
- Rinse your dentures before brushing to remove any loose food or debris.
- Use a soft bristle toothbrush and a non-abrasive cleanser to gently brush all the surfaces of the dentures so they don't get scratched.
- When brushing, clean your mouth thoroughly—including your gums, cheeks, roof of your mouth and tongue to remove any plaque. This can help reduce the risk of oral irritation and bad breath.
- When you’re not wearing your dentures, put them in a safe place covered in water to keep them from warping.
- Occasionally, denture wearers may use adhesives. Adhesives come in many forms: creams, powders, pads/wafers, strips or liquids. If you use one of these products, read the instructions, and use them exactly as directed. Your dentist can recommend appropriate cleansers and adhesives; look for products with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Products with the ADA Seal have been evaluated for safety and effectiveness.

Dr. De Vizio of Colgate answered:It's very important to take good care of your dentures. You need to clean your dentures every day to keep them clean and to keep you healthy. First, rinse your dentures to remove any food or other substances. Then use a toothbrush to brush the dentures as you would brush your natural teeth. You may use a special denture brush or a regular soft-bristled toothbrush. Hand soap, dishwashing detergent, or special denture cleansers may be used, so talk to your dentist about what's best for you. When you're not wearing your dentures, you should store them in a denture soaking solution or water so that they don't dry out. Dr. R. Tom Glass answered:From the moment that you put your dentures into your mouth, they start to become contaminated with germs. These germs do not only live on the denture surface, but they invade the pores of the denture created when the denture was made. Therefore, you must attend to your dentures on a daily basis. Our studies have shown that after only 8 hours of wear, the denture is completely contaminated. Soaking your denture in a denture cleaner for 5 minutes will reduce the number of germs; however, soaking your dentures in a denture cleaner overnight (8 hours) produces the most benefit. Also realize that your dentures' life is usually 5 to 7 years. From the moment that you put your dentures into your mouth, they start to become contaminated with germs. Dr. Arnold Liebman answered:Dentures need to be cleaned every day with a denture brush, denture bath and denture tablets which are sold at the pharmacy. Patients need to take out their dentures, which is typically done during sleep. This is important to not have the pressure from the dentures all day and night.
In addition, dentures need to be checked by the dentist a minimum of one time every year. A dentist can professionally clean your dentures and check that they are fitting and working correctly. It is not just the dentures but changes to your hard and soft tissues that need to be monitored.

Dr. William Litaker answered:Your dentures should be taken out daily (usually at night) so your mouth can rest. They need to be cleaned daily with a denture brush and/or cleaners. Many denture cleaners are available over the counter. When cleaning your dentures, be sure to not drop your dentures. It is advisable to line the sink with a washcloth as you clean them. If you drop your dentures, the washcloth will cushion the fall and prevent damage to your dentures such as cracking the base or breaking a tooth. If you develop a sore in your mouth, you should see your dentist for an adjustment. Your dentures also need to be checked periodically by a dentist at least once a year.

Dr. Saul Miller answered:Very carefully.
Do not use anything abrasive on your dentures. Clean, or at least rinse, your dentures after you have eaten. Use appropriate recommended cleaning agent. Do not drop them. Clean over a sink, but place towel in sink to prevent denture breakage if they fall into sink. Keep them in secure container with water when they are not in your mouth.
Select you foods carefully; take smaller bites; avoid very hard foods.
Never ever wrap your dentures in a tissue, paper towel or napkin. There is a good chance that tissue, paper towel or napkin will be thrown away, along with your dentures.
Consider having a spare denture made. The "spare" may be able to be fabricated using your current denture at a very reasonable cost. This can be money well spent since problems do not necessarily occur at convenient times.
Follow recommendations of your dentist.
