Actions speak louder than words. If you eat healthfully, your children are more likely to, as well. Be a role model with these tips:
    • Snack healthfully. If you snack on chips and soda, your kids will likely do the same. Pave the road for good choices by choosing whole fruit, yogurt or low-fat or fat-free cheese and whole-grain crackers when the munchies hit.
    • Don't skip meals. Kids need all three meals and healthy snacks to keep their energy up. Skipping breakfast can lead to a mid-morning slump and overeating later. Make eating breakfast a family habit.
    • Drink smart. Save sugary drinks as a treat rather than as an everyday beverage choice. Drink low-fat milk, water, 100 percent fruit juice or unsweetened iced tea as a healthy alternative.
To balance calorie intake with calories burned, encourage the whole family to be active, too. It's one more area where you can be a role model for your kids.
