Once upon a time, if you had a tooth with a diseased nerve, you'd probably lose that tooth. Today, with a special dental procedure called a root canal therapy you may save that tooth. Inside each tooth is the pulp which provides nutrients and nerves to the tooth, it runs like a thread down through the root. When the pulp is diseased or injured, the pulp tissue dies. If you don't remove it, your tooth gets infected and you could lose it. After the dentist removes the pulp, the root canal is cleaned and sealed off to protect it. Then your dentist places a crown over the tooth to help make it stronger.

A root canal will allow the diseased tooth to be saved from extraction! The success rate of root canal therapy is excellent (probably more than 95%), and when performed adequately, it will give years of service to the tooth that would otherwise be lost. The options are, doing nothing (which is NOT advisable), or extraction. Ask your dentist what they recommend in your situation, but do not wait, as pain is only one of the many potential side effects.

    Dr. Brandon Aron answered:

Root canal therapy allows you to keep the tooth by removing its dead, diseased or infected nerve tissue. Although the tooth may or may not hurt before a root canal, the therapy will stop the disease progression and allow you to keep the tooth. If left untreated, the infection from the tooth could spread to bone surrounding the tooth and possibly to other parts of the body. Besides doing nothing, the only other option would be to extract the tooth. Replacement options may be available.

A root canal procedure removes the dead or infected tissue at the center of your tooth. The gases created as the tissue dies press on the tooth nerve and cause pain and discomfort. By removing this tissue, cleaning and disinfecting the nerve canal, and filling it with a non-reactive material, the tooth can remain in your mouth.

If there is an infection associated with the tooth because the nerve of the tooth has degenerated or the nerve is in an irreversible state a root canal will enable the body to heal the infection so one can keep the tooth in a healthy state.

Once the infected nerve tissue has been removed and the tooth sealed , the tooth can be restored with a crown. The gum and bone remain attached to the  tooth, so other than not having the ability to experience pain, it will function just the same as other teeth that have not had a root canal.

If the nerve in your tooth gets infected because of decay, disease or trauma then there are only two options for treatment. Either removing the tooth or doing root canal treatment. By doing Root canal treatment you are able to save the tooth and prevent tooth loss. There are times when the tooth is so severely decayed that the tooth will not be able to be restored after root canal treatment. Then the only option is to remove the tooth.

A root canal is often a last resort to “save” a tooth. Typically, when root canal therapy is recommended, there is no other alternative – if left untreated, the tooth will become infected and need to be removed. Usually, it’s a large cavity or other trauma that causes this in the first place. By removing the affected pulp and nerves, the tooth is saved (because there is nothing to infect anymore), and is usually capped with a crown for strength.

    Dr. Dante Gonzales answered:

Once the cavity or crack has reached the pulp of the tooth, root canal therapy will help prevent further progression of the diseased tooth, and help relieve any pain. Once the pulp is infected or there is a crack into the pulp chamber then there are really only two choices, root canal therapy or extraction. Extracting the tooth is a treatment option, but proper root canal therapy can save the tooth for a long time, possibly for life.

A root canal procedure may be needed for different reasons: infection, inflammation, pain, tooth hypersensitivity, decay, fractures, and others. During root canal procedure, canals (spaces) inside of tooth' roots are accessed, cleaned, disinfected when needed, shaped, and filled appropriately. This results in alleviation of pain, disinfection, and creation of solid foundation for restoring and ultimately saving the tooth.

    Dr. Saul Miller answered:

When a tooth requires endodontic therapy (root canal treatment) for any one of a variety of reasons, often the only other alternative is extraction. Therefore, if there is sufficient remaining tooth structure to restore (fix up) the tooth, root canal treatment may be the treatment of choice to avoid tooth removal and then replacement with a bridge or implant restoration.

It must be noted that often a crown (cap) is necessary to restore a root canal treated tooth in order to help avoid future fracture. If the tooth is not properly restored after root canal therapy, the root canal treatment may ultimately fail in addition to the tooth becoming non-restorable due to decay and/or fracture.

Therefore, root canal treatment may prevent tooth loss, but proper restoration of the tooth following treatment is absolutely necessary for success.

When a tooth is abscessed or severely broken, a root canal may be able to prevent tooth loss. The infected and damaged part of the tooth called the pulp is removed, cleaned, and filled. This procedure saves the tooth. The alternative is an extraction (pulling the tooth). See your dentist for information about root canal treatment.

Root Canal therapy helps to save teeth. When the nerve in a tooth dies, or becomes infected, the removal of that nerve allows the tooth to heal and stay in the mouth. That said, most teeth require a post and a crown to build back the anatomy and strengthen what is left of the tooth. Typically a tooth with adequate tooth structure has a long life after root canal therapy.

A root canal prevents tooth loss in several ways:

    1. Infection is removed, pain is gone and the tooth is useful again.

    2. Infections is stopped from spreading outside of the tooth to surrounding tissues. An infected tooth can cause so much bone damage around it that it might make the tooth loose.

    3. A severely broken tooth might be saved by placing a post into its root and building a core and a crown around that post. Root canal is needed in this case to make space the post.
