There is no established dosage for resveratrol to help slow aging. Resveratrol is a plant chemical found naturally in red wine, grapes and peanuts. Animal studies suggest that it may help protect against heart disease, cancer and a number of other age-related conditions.

However, partly because the animal studies used very high doses of resveratrol, scientists caution that the findings are preliminary and may not apply to humans.

Certain individuals should not take resveratrol in supplement form because of possible dangerous interactions. For instance, women with hormone-sensitive conditions such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, endometriosis and uterine fibroids should not take resveratrol because the compound may act like estrogen and make these conditions worse. Resveratrol may also slow blood clotting and should never be taken with other anti-clotting medications or supplements.

Supplements range from 1 to 100 milligrams (mg) per day. One liter (bottle) of red wine contains only about 1-2 mg of resveratrol (range of 0.2 to 5.8 mg per liter). The dose needed in humans to achieve an anti-aging effect are not known, but based on the doses that have been shown to be effective in animals, a human would need from 1500 to 28,000 mg per day of resveratrol. Most scientists recommend about 5 mg/kg per day, pending more studies. This would be about 150 mg per day for an average adult. No short or long-term adverse effects have been noted to date.
