Range of motion in the neck can be measured in two ways. The simplest way is by having the patient touch chin to chest, extend the neck to look up, put ear to shoulder on both sides, and turn the head to both sides. In this way, the athletic trainer can look for differences in motion from side to side.
The athletic trainer can also use a tape measure and a device called a goniometer to check all five motions more accurately.
