How can I prevent spinal disc problems?
-
National Athletic Trainers’ Association answered:An important part of preventing disc problems is strengthening the muscles in the back in order to provide stability in the spinal column. In order to maintain proper posture, abdominal exercises should also be performed. A person’s range of motion can also affect their ability to prevent disc problems; for that reason, stretching exercises can also be done.
Proper posture and proper lifting techniques should also be performed. Remember to lift in a slow and controlled manner, with most of the power coming from the legs, not the back. Most important, remember to breathe in at the beginning of the lift and to breathe out at the end of the lift.(This answer provided for NATA by the University of Tampa Athletic Training Education Program)
