Cancer treatment can affect the hormonal milieu altering estrogen levels and thereby increase risk for osteoporosis and ultimately fracture. Some breast cancer treatments impact this hormonal state. To decrease the likelihood of osteoporosis and ultimate fracture, do the following:
    • Perform weight-bearing exercise such as walking 30 minutes a day, seven days a week.
    • Consume foods that are high in calcium and vitamin D
    • Take 1,200 milligrams (mg) a day of calcium and at least 400 to 600 international units (IU) of vitamin D
    • No smoking
    • No alcohol
    • Spend seven to 10 minutes a day outside for sun exposure to activate vitamin D stores from the skin
    • Get a bone mineral density (BMD) test and consult your physician regarding  bisphosphonate therapy.
