If you are giving someone total parenteral nutrition (TPN) -- a liquid nutrition solution that's administered intravenously (by IV, or through a needle into a vein) -- it's important to take these steps to prevent infection:
    • Before you start the TPN injection, make sure the surface you are working on is washed and dried or has a clean towel over it.
    • Make sure the IV site on the body and all supplies are clean.
    • Avoid contact with people with colds or other illnesses.
    • If you must be in contact with someone who's sick, wash your hands often.
    • If you notice that the IV site is red, tender, swollen or warm, call your doctor right away -- these could be early signs of infection.
    • Look out for other symptoms of infection, including fever, chills and sore throat. Call your doctor right away if you notice these symptoms.
