There are several lifestyle changes that can help reduce acid reflux (which causes GERD).

    For example:

    • Stop smoking
    • Lose weight
    • Change your diet: cut down on fatty, fried, and acidic foods (including anything with tomato sauce), as well as acidic beverages like coffee and orange juice
    • Eat smaller portions
    • Don't lie down too soon after eating
    • Elevate the head of your bed (setting a couple of phone books beneath the mattress is one way)

For many people, simple lifestyle changes can be successful in reducing or eliminating symptoms: stop eating/drinking 3 hours before going to bed and raise the head of your bed so you are not lying flat; decrease fat intake at meals; stop smoking; lose excess weight; avoid foods that may irritate the esophagus such as citrus, tomato products or others according to individual tolerance; eat small, dry meals with fluids taken between meals to limit abdominal distention. In addition, try to avoid ingestion of substances that increase stomach acid secretion such as caffeine, aspirin, chocolate, alcohol, black pepper, red pepper.

If these suggestions are not helpful it may be time to schedule a visit with your primary care provider for an evaluation.
