No special preparation is required before using a tray-based teeth whitening kit. However, it's always a good idea to check with your dentist before using any type of teeth whitening system. Tray-based teeth whitening kits include a whitening gel, which you apply to a tooth tray or mouthpiece. The tray is pressed against the teeth and held in place for several hours a day over the course of several weeks.

A dental exam should be done before teeth whitening. An exam can pick up on dental problems that may need to be corrected before whitening. For example, plaque and tartar should be removed from the teeth and cavities should be filled. Applying whitening agents to teeth that have cavities could cause pain and the teeth to abcess. See your dentist if you are interested in teeth whitening.
