  1. Usually, sprains will take several weeks to fully heal. During this time, try to rest your injured muscle as much as possible. If necessary, use crutches or a cane to avoid putting weight on a sprained ankle or knee. It's also important to continue icing the affected area for 15 minutes at a time every few hours until the sprain is healed. Wrapping the sprained joint in an elastic bandage, splint, or brace may help to stabilize and immobilize the joint. Over-the-counter painkillers may help reduce the swelling and pain of a sprain. As the injury heals, it's important to slowly and gradually start exercising again-if you begin too quickly or intensely, you may further injure your ligaments.

First, have the injury evaluated by a professional such as a certified athletic trainer, physical therapist, or orthopedic surgeon to determine the severity of the injury. Sprains can be managed by icing as often as possible for 20 minutes at a time and waiting at least an hour before applying again. In addition to icing, you will want to engage in rehabilitation exercises (vary depending on joint that is sprained) to stabilize and strengthen the joint. During the course of your normal daily activities you want to protect the injured area by use of a brace, athletic tape, or an elastic wrap.
