Straightening your teeth can be accomplished in different ways. The kind of orthodontic treatment you have will depend on your preference and the options provided by your dentist or orthodontist. How long you have to wear braces varies based on your situation, but most people are in treatment from one to three years. This is followed by a period of wearing a retainer that holds teeth in their new positions.

Dr. De Vizio of Colgate answered:
How long you will need to wear dental braces depends on the severity of the misalignment of your teeth and jaw. In general, braces are usually worn one to three years. In most cases, you can expect to wear a removable retainer for months to years after the braces are removed to ensure that your newly straightened teeth remain that way.

It's decided on a case-by-case basis.
