How are lasers used to treat plaque psoriasis?
-
Dr. Douglas Severance answered:The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the excimer laser for the treatment of chronic, psoriasis plaques. This laser gives off a high-intensity ray of ultraviolet light B (UVB). the laser beams target certain areas of skin affected by mild or moderate psoriasis. It may take from 4 to 10 sessions using the excimer laser to see any results.
Experts recommend two treatments each week with two days between each session. Another treatment for psoriasis plaques is the pulsed dye laser, which is approved also. Using this pulsed dye laser, the tiny blood vessels that add to the forming of psoriasis lesions are destroyed. You may have this treatment in 15 to 30 minute sessions every three weeks. It may take from 4 to 6 session to clear up the psoriasis lesion.
