How is stasis dermatitis treated?

The goal in treating stasis dermatitis is to stop blood from pooling in the veins. It is critical for swelling to go down in order for stasis dermatitis to heal. Different forms of compression can help reduce the swelling. Specialty support hose or compression stockings can be helpful. Unna's paste boot is a wrap that uses compression and a paste with gelatin and zinc to help reduce swelling.

If the rash has formed open sores or ulcers, additional treatment is needed. Special gels can help the sores heal. Soaking gauze pads in Burow's solution, or aluminum acetate, may also help. Corticosteroids, antibiotic creams, alcohol, and other chemicals should not be placed directly on open sores. A doctor can help identify additional useful creams.
