How is neurodermatitis treated?
-
Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:Neurodermatitis is a type of eczema that develops when nerve endings in the skin become irritated. It is often treated with topical corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and itching and topical antibiotics to treat or prevent infection. A doctor can prescribe oral antibiotics to clear a skin infection and topical keratolytics to reduce skin thickness. Sometimes a person is given sedatives to help reduce anxiety. The treatment goal is to get the person to stop scratching his or her skin.
Wrapping the affected area may help to avoid scratching. Some dermatologists also recommend keeping your fingernails short, applying ice to the area instead of scratching, and avoiding itchy fabrics and stressful situations.

The goal in treating neurodermatitis is getting the patient to stop all scratching and rubbing in the affected area. This can be done by wrapping or covering the rash. Corticosteroid creams may help relieve the itch and inflammation from the rash. Sometimes counseling to learn to control different behaviors is helpful. In extreme cases, medication for depression or anxiety might help.
