How is baldness diagnosed?
-
The diagnosis of your baldness will likely be overseen by your primary care doctor or a specialist known as a dermatologist. Initial diagnostic methods generally include a comprehensive interview of your medical history and a physical examination. If the cause of your hair loss is not determined from your history and physical exam, further diagnostic testing may be necessary. This additional testing may include skin scrapings, biopsy, and evaluation for other diseases.

Dr. Jeffrey Benabio answered:Baldness can often be diagnosed just by an exam by a dermatologist. Always the history such as family history of balding, recent stress or illness is helpful. Sometimes blood work such as thyroid function tests are checked. Rarely a biopsy of the scalp is taken to send to a pathologist to help determine the underlying cause. Although not all types of balding can be cured, they all can be treated or improved. See your dermatologist if you have questions or concerns.
