    Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:
Rest is a key component of any fibromyalgia treatment plan, especially since poor sleep is common when you have fibromyalgia. Studies looking at the brain waves of people with fibromyalgia show that their sleep resembles being simultaneously asleep and awake. As a result, you wake up feeling unrefreshed. A good treatment program involves medications that help reduce pain and allow you to sleep better, a gentle exercise routine, and techniques for coping with fibromyalgia. You may need to adjust your lifestyle so you have more quiet time and can get the rest you need.

Getting rest/sleep is important to everyone for micro healing to take place. Unfortunately, disordered sleep is one of the primary symptoms of fibromyalgia. This means that in most patients, the normal sleep circadian rhythm is absent or upset.

If you are having difficulty getting to sleep, staying asleep, or still feel as though you haven’t slept after sleeping for eight hours (non-restorative sleep), talk with your physician. Your doctor may want tests, such as a sleep study, or explore other reasons you are having sleep such as thyroid problems which is noted as a comorbid condition to fibromyalgia. Medication trials may be in order.

Getting enough restful sleep is a very important part of living successfully with fibromyalgia. Sleep allows the body to repair itself, both physically and mentally. Living with fibromyalgia can be difficult, so a good night's sleep will work wonders, restoring your energy and reducing stress.

Try to establish a regular time for going to bed and waking up each day. If you can avoid daytime naps, you will sleep better at night. Limit the amounts of caffeine you consume. Caffeine can disrupt your sleep. Nicotine is a stimulant as well, so try to give up smoking, especially in the evening.

If you are able to establish good sleep patterns, the quality of your sleep will increase. If you have trouble getting the rest you need, ask your doctor or healthcare provider for help.
