  1. Your doctor may find a thyroid nodule while completing a regular physical exam if lumps are noticeable. In addition, an ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI may be ordered to diagnosis the type and extent of a thyroid nodule. Blood work will be ordered to check hormone levels. Further testing may be warranted, and this could include a biopsy, thyroid scan, or more complex imaging tests.
