Electrical impulses through the heart muscle cause the heart to beat. The impulse starts in the right atrium and then is carried through the heart chambers to the right and left ventricles. When this happens, a heartbeat or pulse occurs. There is a one-to-one relationship between the beating of the atrium and the beating of the ventricles. Usually, the heart beats 60 to 80 times a minute.
