A lot can be said for stabilizing your health simply by eating the right diet. Sometimes you can avoid an asthma attack by eating primarily low-allergen foods -- foods such as fresh vegetables, lean meats, fish, and poultry. Avoid processed foods (anything that comes prepackaged in a wrapper). If you have food sensitivities, by all means avoid trigger foods.

How healthful is your diet? If you have asthma, eating well should be part of your overall management plan; a varied diet with lots of vitamins, minerals, and flavonoids may actually help reduce the risk of asthma flare-ups. It's all thanks to the anti-inflammatory powers of these nutrients:
    • Vitamins: Some research suggests that getting ample amounts of vitamins A, C, D, and E may help reduce asthma symptoms.
    • Minerals: Some studies have found that people with asthma are deficient in magnesium and selenium.
    • Omega-3 fatty acids: These fats fight inflammation, which may help reduce asthma symptoms.
    • Flavonoids: In one study, people who had high intakes of flavonoids -- powerful antioxidants found in onions, tea, and citrus fruit -- had lower rates of asthma.

While you're eating better, remember to limit intake of any foods or ingredients known to trigger your asthma. For example, some people find that their symptoms are triggered by the sulfites in dried fruit.
