In the early stage of periodontal (gum) disease, called gingivitis, the gums can become red, swollen and bleed easily. At this stage, the disease is still reversible and can usually be eliminated by daily brushing and flossing.

In the more advanced stages of periodontal (gum) disease, called periodontitis, the gums and bone that support the teeth can become seriously damaged. The teeth can become loose, fall out or have to be removed by a dentist.

    Dr. R. Tom Glass answered:
The gums or gingiva are essential to oral health. Infections of the gums can spread throughout the mouth causing irritation and infection. Gum diseases can spread to the bones that hold the teeth in the mouth, resulting is the early loss of teeth. Finally, the germs that cause gum disease can spread through the blood vessels to the heart; be aspirated into the sinuses and lungs; and be swallowed so they cause infections of the gastrointestinal tract. Thus gum disease not only affects the mouth, but also the entire body.
