    Dr. Patrick Maguire answered:
For very early or in situ (pre-invasive) nonmelanoma skin cancers, topical treatment may provide good local tumor control. One randomized controlled trial (RCT) from Scotland tested three different conservative, nonsurgical treatments: cryotherapy (freezing), topical fluorouracil chemotherapy, and photodynamic therapy (PDT) with topical methyl aminolevulinate. This trial revealed that PDT was superior to the other two methods, and cosmetic appearance was rated good to excellent by 94% of patients.
