Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often causes different symptoms for girls and boys. The National Resource Center on ADHD shares that girls are less likely than boys to show hyperactive symptoms of ADHD. As a result, they are sometimes less likely to be diagnosed with the disorder. However, the trend of underdiagnosing ADHD can cause problems for some girls, who may experience a host of problems.
Some of the problems that girls with ADHD are more likely to face when compared to girls without the disorder include:
- behavior problems
- depression, bipolar, and anxiety disorders
- low IQ scores and trouble with schoolwork
- problems with peers and family members
- substance abuse and smoking
- low self-esteem
