How do medications treat hemorrhoids?
-
Most of the treatments for hemorrhoids do not involve medications. If your symptoms are mild, however, your doctor may recommend some over-the-counter ointments with hydrocortisone or witch hazel to ease itching and pain. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may also be used for especially painful hemorrhoids.

Burke Lennihan RN CCH answered:Natural remedies like Phosphorus, Nux vomica, Sepia and Aesculus can help, depending on your specific symptoms.
First, though, consider why you have hemorrhoids – which are like varicose veins of the anus. If you’re a woman, and you have varicose veins in your legs plus hemorrhoids, you may need to strengthen your veins so that they don’t bulge out in either place. If you get varicose veins in a hormonal situation (like pregnancy or menopause) or from standing too much, you are likely to benefit from the remedy Sepia. You can get it from any health food store, or online (for example at www.homeopathic.com) and also see my answer for varicose veins.
Other people get hemorrhoids because their liver is congested, and the sluggish circulation into the liver backs up into the anus, causing hemorrhoids. Taking drugs can’t cure the problem if the real solution is healing the liver. Nux vomica is a natural remedy that can help your liver and your hemorrhoids at the same time.
Still other people get hemorrhoids because they are constipated. When they strain to eliminate their stool, they push out the little veins around the anus. The longterm solution for these people is to eliminate their constipation. Nux vomica is one of many remedies that can help with constipation, along with lifestyle factors – please see my answer about constipation for more suggestions.
Again, some people can relieve their hemorrhoids with natural remedies which match their specific symptoms. For example, if the hemorrhoids bleed a lot, with bright red blood, Phosphorus is likely to help. If you have pain like splinters or sticks in the area, Aesculus is likely to help.
For any of these natural remedies, get the 30c potency (strength) in any health food store or online, and dissolve a few pellets in your mouth once a day. If you don’t notice a change after three doses, you probably need something else.
Finally, you can use an old-fashioned herbal remedy which is still available in drugstores – witch hazel, which can be applied topically to hemorrhoids (as well as to varicose veins) to tighten and shrink them. Dilute the witch hazel if it stings.
