Returning to civilian work after military service will normally involve some readjustment. If you are going back to a job you previously held, you might find it boring or meaningless after the challenges and intensity of the combat zone. You may have new co-workers or a different supervisor. There may be changes in procedures or new skills required. Those who covered your duties while you were away might have handled them differently than you did before you left. It could take a while till you feel like you fit in again. To ease your transition back to work, try some of these suggestions:

    • Demonstrate appreciation for those who covered your job while you were gone
    • Be aware of how military life may have changed the way you think and approach problems
    • Ask for support when you need it
    • Talk to people you trust about work concerns
    • Volunteer to learn new skills or get additional training that will enhance your job performance

Above all, be patient with yourself and with your co-workers while making the transition.
