    Dr. Michael Roizen answered:
Contact lenses are essentially eyeglasses that you place directly on your eyeballs. And then lose in a shag carpet, unlike eyeglasses. They evolved from large glass pieces that had to be removed with a small plunger to soft lenses that perfectly fit on the eyeball.

New waves of contacts will become really sophisticated-some lenses may detect levels of blood sugar, so diabetics will know when their blood sugar changes based on the color of the lenses changing (yes, you would need a mirror).

Contact lenses are lenses designed to ride on the surface of the eye to effectively change the curvature of the cornea which then corrects the vision of the eye. They come as soft, rigid or a combination lens to accomplish this purpose. Not only do contacts have to have a lens power they also have a curvature to be fit for comfort and good centration. Recently manufacturers have added different colors to enhance the appearance of the eyes. Because contacts lay directly on the eyes they, unlike glasses, can cause irritation, infection and even scarring of they are not fit and maintained well.
