To clean your wound, you should remove any debris in your cut with tweezers and isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). Then rinse the wound with cool water and use soap and a washcloth to clean the area around the wound. Try not to get soap into the cut, as it may cause irritation.

Apply antibiotic ointment and watch for signs of infection. These include: redness spreading from the wound site, increasing pain, drainage, warmth, swelling and a bad odor. If you experience any sign of infection or if your wound will not stop bleeding, contact your doctor.

Open wounds may require wet to dry dressing changes with sterile normal saline, hydrogen peroxide or other antibacterial solutions. Your surgeon may need to debride necrotic tissue edges to create a bed of granulation tissue before the wound edges will come together (secondary wound healing). Burn wounds may require silvadene cream twice a day or sulfamylon. Talk to your doctor especially with symptoms of fever, redness, swelling or increased pain.
