The care of a knocked out tooth is critical to try to save the tooth. Handle the tooth very carefully and try not touch it roots. Do not clean the knocked out tooth with alcohol or peroxide. Simply hold the crown of the tooth (not the root), rinse the tooth with whole milk, and then gently try to place the cleaned tooth back in the socket. Do not apply too much pressure. If you are unable to place the tooth back in the socket, store the tooth in a cup of whole milk or saliva until you arrive at the dentist.

Time is of the essence when a permanent tooth is knocked out. The best treatment is to immediately place the tooth right back in the socket, hold it there and go straight to the dentist, who will stabilize the tooth with a wire to hold it in place while it heals. It is important to hold the tooth by the visible part and not touch or clean the tooth root because you will disturb the cells that attach to the bone. A little dirt probably will not hurt anything but if the tooth is really dirty, rinse it quickly (without touching the root) before putting it back into the socket.

If it is impossible to put it back in the socket then have the patient hold the tooth in their mouth or soak it in milk and try to get to the dentist within one hour to have it replanted. Keep in mind that this does not have as high a success rate as placing it back into the socket immediately.
