Accepting that you have fibromyalgia, or any other chronic disease, is a process. It can be a long and difficult process, for sure, but it's a journey worth taking.

Psychologists say that there are various stages people usually pass through before accepting an illness. One stage is denial, or pretending everything is okay. Another is anger. You may feel rage and find yourself asking, Why me? Finally, it may be important for you to acknowledge how sad you feel about your new reality. Eventually, after passing through these stages, you may notice one day that you have accepted fibromyalgia as part of your life -- one that can still be fulfilling and rewarding.

Acceptance is the first step to managing fibromyalgia, but it is hard to do. You are grieving the person you once were, and so are those around you. You may or may not find the support you need. If you are not, see a counselor that is experienced in helping people with chronic pain. My co-author started out as my therapist.

Your function has been altered and finding new ways of coping with losses is important to acceptance and can be empowering. Do not doubt that you can. I am a prime example of that. It is about redefining the new you.

I suggest journaling. Writing poetry is also a great way to work through your inner most thoughts. In chapter three “Dialogues Within and Without,” we offer many tips on how to accomplish meeting your new goals.

Acceptance is a predictor of healthy coping.

Affirmations are another good place to start. See http://www.thesethree.com/fibromyalgia/affirmations.php
