With newer friends, if you choose to tell them about your multiple sclerosis (MS), you will have to break the ice and let them know it's okay to talk about it and ask you questions. You should be well-enough adjusted so that you'll have other things in common to talk about. One goal you should keep in mind for your friendships is enriching your life through shared experiences. That means going to museums, dashing out for ice cream or a pizza, or arguing whether or not Richard Nixon has been treated fairly by historians. If you find MS is becoming more and more of a focal point, that the other aspects of your friendships are diminishing in the balance, a weekly support group might give you the emotional outlet you need. This helps confine your focus of MS to a certain time and place, allowing the rest of your life to return to business as usual.
