    Throughout the ages, almost all religions and cultures had some form of meditative or prayerful ritual capable of eliciting the body's relaxation response. All of these varied techniques include two simple steps:

    1. Focusing the mind on a repetitive word, sound, prayer, phrase or muscular activity, such as breathing.

    2. Adopting a passive attitude toward the thoughts that go through your head. In other words, when intrusive thoughts come into your mind, you calmly disregard them and return your attention to the word or phrase you are repeating.
