Dental x-rays are painless. You may feel a bit of discomfort when you are asked to bite down on the bite block or strip that holds the film in your mouth, but it is not painful.

If you have questions about any dental treatment, including x-rays, talk to you dentist.

    Healthwise answered:

Dental X-rays take only a few minutes and are not painful.

Some people may gag on the plastic or cardboard that holds the X-ray film. People often find it easier to relax if they focus on something else (such as an object on the wall) and take slow, deep breaths through their nose during the X-rays.

    Dr. Saul Miller answered:

Dental radiographs (x-rays) will feel like nothing; there is no feeling when the film or sensor is exposed. There may be some discomfort from the film or sensor which has to be positioned properly for a radiograph of diagnostic quality to be made.

In addition, you must remain still during the taking of the radiograph; however this is for a very very brief time since high speed film and digital sensors are used during the process.
