Although age-related macular degeneration (AMD) isn't yet curable, there is an expanding array of aids for people with low vision, such as magnifying devices, adjustable lamps, and large-print versions of playing cards, keypads, books, and periodicals. A pea-sized telescopic lens, when implanted in the eye, has significantly improved vision in people with AMD in clinical trials. The device, called an implantable miniaturized telescope, focuses light on a broader area of the retina to compensate for the damaged macula.
