Typically a damaged valve is repaired surgically if and when it becomes medically necessary due to narrowing or "incompetence" (floppiness) of the valve affecting the blood flow through it. Surgical repair can be an "open" procedure so-called open heart surgery or in selected cases be performed through a catheter placed into one of the large veins in the leg and threaded into the heart.
