If your atrial fibrillation cannot be converted to a normal sinus rhythm, your doctor may want to control the rapid heartbeat to allow you to feel better. Your doctor may lower your heartbeat with medications. Beta blockers and calcium channel blockers are often used to control the fast heart rate of atrial fibrillation. The goal will be to get your heart rate down to 60 to 100 beats a minute. If these medications fail to get the heart rate lower, your doctor may use AV node ablation. AV node ablation uses radio frequency energy that goes into a long, thin catheter or tube to destroy the abnormal tissue that disrupts the normal flow of electrical signals in the heart. A pacemaker is surgically implanted to bring about a normal heart rhythm.
