How can my conscious mind overcome negative emotions?
-
Master Stephen Co answered:If you’ve ever attempted to use your conscious mind to overcome fears, anxieties, or limiting beliefs, you likely tried one of three remedies: denying, or suppressing them from conscious awareness; diverting, or replacing the negative thought with positive thoughts; or distracting, engaging in compulsive activity so that you won’t notice them. And if you did try one of these three popular remedies, you also likely found out that it helped you feel better for a while, but did not permanently remove the negative emotion or belief. Denying or suppressing a negative emotion only gives it more power because your unconscious mind buries the feelings even deeper. Diverting your attention through repetition of positive affirmations may enable you to overcome mild fears temporarily. For deep-seated anxieties and rooted beliefs, though, it’s like applying a fresh coat of paint over an old surface without scraping and priming first; it won’t last. Distracting yourself by taking drugs, drinking, gambling, having excessive sex, becoming a workaholic, or immersing yourself in a hobby is nothing more than avoidance. The problem doesn’t go away; you’re just hiding from it. Denying, diverting, and distracting don’t provide lasting results because they are attempts at conscious denial of an unconscious problem. If you try consciously to disavow or block off your unconscious emotions and beliefs, you’re fighting yourself. This only increases the resistance.
