    Dr. Dean Ornish answered:
Although there are many different types of psychotherapy, working with a skilled and compassionate therapist is another way to help you re-experience suppressed or repressed emotions without feeling judged. The therapist's compassion for you can allow you to have the same compassion for yourself and, eventually, for others. This process can help you to heal your isolation both from your inner feelings and from others. The experience of insight during psychotherapy-like getting health information - is important but usually not sufficient to motivate someone to change self-destructive patterns. When insight and information are combined with compassion, though, it can be profoundly healing.
