    Dr. Jerry Gordon answered:
Traumatic tongue injuries are not that common. They most often occur in youth, when an injury occurs that causes the front teeth to bite down through the tongue. If this occurs, a dentist should evaluate the teeth and tongue and provide the required treatment. Many times, the tongue will not require any stitches because it tends to heal quickly, but in some cases, a stitch may be necessary. Custom made athletic mouth guards should be worn by athletes to prevent mouth injuries.
