In the United States, primary cancers of the liver and bile ducts within the liver are estimated to be diagnosed in 24,000 patients annually. Within this group, about 75% arise from the liver tissue and these are predominantly hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC). Cancers of the bile ducts within and just outside the liver tissue, called cholangiocarcinomas, account for another 10% to 20%. It's estimated that 19,000 patients will die of these diseases each year in the United States. The median age at diagnosis is 64, and these diseases are rarely diagnosed before age 35. The lifetime risk of developing HCC is a 0.8%, or about one in 125 people.
