    Kidney stones are surprisingly common. In fact, over 5% of the U.S. population has had one, and the lifetime risk of having a kidney stone is about 1 in 7. The most common age group is 20 to 40 years old, but they can occur in children and senior citizens alike.

    Men are three times more likely than women to have kidney stones. (Women often say that passing a stone can feel worse than giving birth, so maybe kidney stones are nature's way of evening the score.)
