    Dr. Michael Roizen answered:
Hip fractures are astoundingly common. Thirty to 40 percent of women over age sixty-five have fractured their spine or vertebrae, and 25 percent of such women will suffer a fractured hip. Men traditionally have been much less susceptible to bone fractures than women. Just 15 to 20 percent of men over age sixty-five have these kinds of debilitating fractures.

    Dr. Scott Martin answered:
Each year about 329,000 hip fractures occur in the United States. One in seven women fractures a hip at some point in life, as does one in 17 men. These numbers have been declining since 1995, possibly due to the use of bone-preserving drugs known as bisphosphonates. At the same time, the average age for hip fracture has steadily increased, from age 73 to age 79.
