Unintentional drug poisonings have spiked in the United States, with a five-fold increase since 1990, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fatal but unintentional drug overdoses from opioid prescription painkillers such as oxycodone (OxyContin) and hydrocodone (Vicodin) are two times higher than fatal overdoses involving cocaine and 5.5 times higher than those involving heroin, according to federal statistics.
