Nearly one out of every five people ages 65 to 74 has cataracts, and nearly one out of every two people older than 74 has them. The good news is that cataract surgery is a safe option for successfully curing the condition.

    Dr. Laura Fine answered:
A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye (the lens focuses light rays to the retina, the innermost layer of the eye, where images are captured and recorded). Most people develop some degree of lens opacity by age 60. Cataract occurs in about half of all people ages 65 to 74 and in about 70% of those older. Despite surgical advances, the lack of access to health care in developing countries makes cataract the leading preventable cause of blindness in the world today.
