    Dr. Julia Schlam Edelman answered:
Clonidine (or Catapress) is a medication that helps to lower high blood pressure by working through the central nervous system. It also helps to decrease hot flashes and night sweats. In some cases, a woman's primary care physician, internist, or family doctor may be able to prescribe Clonidine to control high blood pressure and simultaneously reduce hot flashes.

Some women need more than one type of medicine to control high blood pressure, and Clonidine may be selected as one of the prescriptions. A woman on Clonidine would then benefit from its dual effects in reducing her hot flashes and lowering her blood pressure.
