In almost every case, your pediatrician will be able to grease the wheels once you get to the Emergency Department (ED). Even when I’ve been traveling several states away, I’ve often gotten my patients to the front of the ED line (when there’s been good reason) because they called me and I called the ED. Also, I often talk to parents on the phone while their child is in the ED about what tests will likely be performed, what the diagnosis may be, and what treatment options to expect. The ED docs don’t have time to talk this through with parents while they’re working on their child, so many parents find it comforting to be clued in on what’s going on (or what’s likely going on, anyway) and what amusements are coming next.
