Hormone-refractory prostate cancer implies that the cancer no longer responds to hormone therapy, but the fact that prostate cancer responds to drugs like abiraterone and MDV3100 shows that the tumor is still "hormone sensitive." As a result, some experts prefer the term castration-resistant prostate cancer.
