First, it is important to make sure that the infection is not contagious, or you may end up requiring care yourself. Some infections, such as the common cold, will always be contagious. In those cases, arm yourself against the infection by limiting contact with the infection. Wash your hands frequently when caring for an infected person. Try to keep their care limited to one part of the house so the infection doesn't travel. You should also disinfect things they touch, such as the phone or doorknobs, to stop the spread. If the infection is something for which there is a vaccine--such as the flu, or chickenpox--you may wish to get the shot or, if you've had one, see if you need a booster.
