How do I care for someone with a bacterial oral infection?
-
Sometimes bacterial oral infections affect children, as in the case of strep throat and scarlet fever. When that is the case, be sure the child eats foods that don't irritate the throat, stays hydrated, gets plenty of rest, and gargles with saltwater. Using a humidifier in their room and keeping irritating substances (like cigarette smoke) away from them may also be helpful. Typically with these illnesses, once a child is on antibiotics, they feel significantly better within 24 to 48 hours. Be sure they complete the fully prescribed course of antibiotics, even if they feel better.
