How do I care for someone with aphthous stomatitis (canker sore)?

American Dental Association answered:Canker sores usually heal on their own within a week or two. If you’re looking for pain relief over-the-counter topical anesthetics and antimicrobial mouthwashes may provide temporary relief. Stay away from hot, spicy or acidic foods that can irritate the sore. Antibiotics from your dentist and some oral bandages can reduce secondary infection.

Dr. De Vizio of Colgate answered:There is not much you can do to help cure aphthous stomatitis, or a canker sore. Most canker sores are not serious and will go away by themselves within a week or two. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be given to relieve pain caused by the sore, and over-the-counter salves are available to reduce irritation when eating, drinking, or brushing teeth. There is not much you can do to help cure aphthous stomatitis, or a canker sore. Most people with aphthous stomatitis (canker sore) do not need someone to care for them. However, if you do have care-taking responsibilities for someone who has a canker sore, remind them that it will be gone within two weeks. Apply a topical over-the-counter medication to give pain relief. Seek medical help if the sores do not heal within two weeks or seem extremely painful or large.
