  1. With advancing age, the pigment producing cells within the hair follicles tend to produce less pigment. The result is a lighter-colored hair fiber produced by the affected hair follicle. Some follicles may stop producing pigment altogether, yielding hair fibers that are white in appearance. The net result of a significant number of white hair fibers mixed with others that retain color is a general perception of the hair color as "gray. " Also, with advancing age, our hair tends to become drier and less elastic and natural oil production decreases. Consequently, older individuals with gray hair may need to care for their hair differently than those who are younger. Hair care considerations for those with gray hair include less frequent cleansing, use of a conditioner, and vigilance with regard to chemical treatments.
